I find that using your brain to figure out "what-if" scenarios goes a long way towards preventing injury. I you get hurt a lot you may want to revisit your attitude.
Here are some general safety guidelines I always stick by, and miracles of miracles, I never get hurt unless I don't follow them:
- Wear Eye and Ear Protection. Blind and deaf are permanent. People always forget about ear protection.
- Wear Gloves. If you are welding, wear leather gauntlets. If you are working with any chemicals, wear rubber gloves. Otherwise, wear cheap 1-dollar leather gloves.
- Get the right tool for the job. If you need a hammer, use a hammer. Using the wrong tool is unsafe, costly, and usually just destroys what you working on, the tool, or your hand/face
- Electricity will blast you off this mortal coil in a heartbeat. Put one hand in your pocket if working on anything "live", otherwise in short order you won't be. Assume everything is live until tested.
- Ventilate when welding or working with chemicals. Also wear an organic vapor mask if working with volatile chemicals.
- If you are working with rotating machinery, do NOT wear gloves, loose clothing, etc. If it gets caught in a machine it will probably eat your arm off, or face off. Whoohoo!
